The Research Paper
Abstract
In recent years, Major League Baseball has had numerous issues with umpires making controversial bad calls. Although the traditionalist baseball fan opposes the use of replay, their argument is growing increasingly invalid. Using instant replay in Major League Baseball solves many issues that accompany the game today, mainly costly errors on the part of the umpires. It will create a game that will not be plagued with bad calls, arrogance of umpires, or a loss of respect. Umpires have cost many teams entire playoff games, and in fact, a World Series title. They made the wrong call back in 1985 against the St. Louis Cardinals, in 2007 against the San Diego Padres, and in 2010 against the Detroit Tigers. All were huge moments in the game, and in one case, big enough to cost a pitcher a perfect game. These do not even begin to do the issue justice. The fact is, every day calls are blown. It has become such a problem that we are actually becoming immune to it. No one is concerned about it anymore, because it happens so often. The issue is that the arrogance of the umpires leaves no room for instant replay to be considered. One of the oldest sports in the world needs to learn to adapt. Otherwise, the future does not look good for baseball. If instant replay is implemented, it will finally create a respectable game that will once again be a cornerstone of American culture. It will completely change the game, finally bringing in a positive era of officiating.
